History

There are reasons to belive that tennis was introducted to Čakovec already in 1904. In the memory book of the Teachers School there is a photo of a tennis player, and a special tennis court is mentioned. The first real tennis court was built in Čakovec in 1926, at the same lace where the Clubs tennis courts are today. The court and ever higher interest of people led to the foundation of the tennis section within the "Čakovec Sport Club" the very same year. Two names are important for the beginning of the organised tennis in Čakovec: Mr. Geza Legenstein and dr. Jerko Franetović.

A whole line of top tennis players has come out of this tennis club from Čakovec (Franjo Punčec, Vladimir Petrović, Milan Branović, Josip Šarić, Ladislav Legenstein, Ladislav Jagec ...) Some of them were national champions, and several have played under the national flag, too. Franjo Punčec, whose name the Club today bears, is one of those who have reached the very top of the world sports. He entered the list of the top ten Croatian sportmen of all times.
